Summary
Near the end of her pregnancy Concubine Gyokuyou is attacked in the middle of the night. Maomao steps in to defend her and while fighting for her life ends up taking the life of the attacker while sustaining serious injuries.
While Jinshi steps in to care for her physically, Maomao deals with the mental turmoil of taking a life.
With Maomao vulnerable and Jinshi doing his best to be patient with her, something begins to bloom between them.

Summary
Maomao is a cat that Jinshi just happened to take on the responsibility of feeding (with weird forensic accounting cases and crazy expensive traditional medicine). Jinshi should not be mad if she wants someone else to feed her the attention he usually lavishes on her, for a change. So, what exactly happened here?
Maomao's eyes sparkle like the stars in the sky when she laughs at something, the mischievous grin Jinshi both loves and fears clear as day on her face as she looks up and sees the guy flush beet red. Jinshi wishes that grin was focused on him instead, but he also knows he is bad at giving up on lost causes.
"I'm not sulking," Jinshi pouts, obviously sulking.
JinMao office AU, possible spoilers (if you don't know why Jinshi is called the way he is in this fic...well) ahead.

Jinshi, self-proclaimed General Assistant to the CEO, is honestly really getting on Maomao's nerves.
Yes she blindly followed his lead into Ka Corporate Holdings, because the title of forensic accountant sounded so fucking cool and interesting and the pay is amazing, but no that does not mean this is ever part of her job description.
Jinshi hired her on a whim, and Maomao accepted, also on a whim. Neither of them could have ever imagined that they would ever prefer to stay together.
This is probably worldbuilding for the office AU, but dear reader, you be the judge. Spoilers tagged as needed!

He hadn't noticed it at first. His brain was whirring wild with everything he had to do next, because this was an emergency - the apothecary just ingested poison, and she smiled at him as bright as the sun, her spirits still high from the whiff of danger that she had probably been waiting for all this time.
Jinshi hears Maomao mutter something under her breath, and now it's all he can think about. Instead of just asking her what exactly she meant by that, he decides he has to think this all out by himself, because it seems to be the right thing to do in this situation...but, what exactly is this situation? He's about to find out.
Spoilers for BG manga ch. 13, GX manga ch. 9, the LN vol.1/WN arc 1 chapter titled "Misunderstanding", which at the time of writing will most probably be tackled in the anime a few episodes from now!
