Summary
Ever since the new farmer girl arrived in town, Haley started feeling things she never felt before.
It all got worse when Sofia started bringing gifts to her. Every day, she would find herself waiting for the farmer to show up at her door. She pretended to not be affected by it, to not have any interest in the girl. In fact, she was lying to herself, telling her mind and racing heart she just liked to be spoiled. But even if she was brutally honest with the farmer girl — and sometimes just straight up mean — she always came back to her doorstep with a smile.
But it all went downhill when she found out the farmer had been gifting other girls in town. Poppies for Penny, amethysts for Abigail...what once made her feel special, was being shared with others.
All those days she thought she had been warming up to Sofia, being genuinely happy to have her attention, they were all gone in a second. And once the farmer showed up with another stupid sunflower in her hand, Haley couldn't help but feel frustrated.
"Urgh, this is such a...stupid gift"

Mira continued to stare at her shoes, but when her father didn’t speak for a long enough time, she chanced a small glance up at him. He wasn’t looking at her, he was looking at the dining table, warbled reflections of them both bouncing off the glossy dark-stained wood and reflecting back at them. His eyes were wide and wild looking, his nostrils flared. He was literally vibrating with anger, his hands both in fists at his sides. When he spoke next his voice was far from shouting, instead low and deadly, like a predator’s growl as it wound up to pounce.
