Sua’s face crumples. “Don’t, Mizi. I don’t want to hear it. Just— get in the shower already.” Her gaze catches on the love bites again, and she grits her teeth, trying her best to ignore them.
But Mizi notices where her gaze is going, and her hackles raise. “I didn’t want them, okay?!” She’s angry now that Sua’s worked her up, and they’re both too exhausted to de-escalate. Mizi walks forward, jabbing at her chest, backing her up against the wall. “You WANTED me to pursue this dream! You supported me every step of the way! And what, you can’t handle—”
Sua pushes her hand away roughly— eyes narrowing, and she’s yelling too, now. “Me wanting you to be an idol doesn’t mean I want you out there- I don’t know—” She averts her gaze, voice harsh and discordant. “—making out with random guys, Mizi! Seriously, what the fuck!”
Mizi scoffs. “Oh, so we’re swearing now. Thought you were too delicate for that.”

Mizi’s eyes opened to her guardian leaning over her head, banging a hammer against the wall. “Shine, when I don’t get my nine hours, my eyebags look horrendous.”
“I know, Mizi dearest, but all the others keep saying you’re going to get taken this year.” Shine’s words came from over her head, as she determinedly nailed a misshapen bar over her bedroom window— which was now completely covered in nails, spikes and screws. “They say to shear off your hair, rub dirt on your cheeks— as if I could do such a thing to your precious face! I don’t believe a bit of that fairy-tale hogwash, but no one’s getting in here tonight…”
“That’s for sure!” A final bang of the hammer punctuated her words.

The first kidnappings began two hundred years before. Some years it was two boys taken, some years two girls, sometimes one of each... if at first the pattern seemed random, it soon became clear.
