Only that life is stressful and being and adult sucks. Summary
A Firefall Series (Peter Watts) AU in which the Fireflies do not come. The story focuses on a vampire, Dr. Cyrus Woods, who lives in a minimum security vampire holding facility. Cyrus is one of a handful of vampires allowed to work freely with humans.
Cyrus' professional life is devoted to the hard-to-prove idea that some ancient humans and some ancient vampires lived together cooperatively and mutually benefited from killing other hominids together and protecting one another. More subtly, he wants this idea to proliferate so that humans will sympathize with the plight of modern, oppressed vampires.
In his personal life, he forges a powerful relationship with a human researcher and injects himself into the man's family, which becomes complicated when the man's daughter falls in love with Cyrus.
