Summary
No one would believe him truly repentant, and certainly not the Elf who has hunted him for an Age. He's not entirely certain he believes it himself and old habits are hard to break, but he's trying.
When you have fallen as far as Mairon has, even failing to do evil seems like a path to redemption.
If only the damned Elf would leave him be.

Summary
Galadriel never learns that Halbrand is Sauron and Sauron fully embraces the identity of Halbrand. He thinks maybe it wasn’t just the mithril he was missing in his previous endeavours but her, so he decides to align his goals with hers. He intends to use his knowledge and power and the position she gave him to help her fulfil her purpose. At least the broader one, not the killing him one.
Basically, he gives her everything he promised on the raft, but they never actually had the conversation, so he never told her his plan and she never turned him down.
She’s not an idiot though and he knows this so it will still come to head at some point.First chapter is Saurons POV deciding to go all in on team Galadriel. Most of the rest is Galadriel POV, with a bit of Elrond thrown in for sass.

Summary
It is not a single step, from darkness to light. It took millennia for Mairon to descend into the depths of darkness and it would take just as long for Sauron to climb back out.
But for one so lost, even the smallest kindness is a step in the right direction. The decision to shoo an insect rather than swat it, to spare a life, to tell the truth.
Sauron does not walk this path; he stumbles along it, graceless, meandering, unsure whether he even wishes to walk it at all. There are stumbling blocks, some of which he clears and others which send him tumbling back down.
In this story, Sauron chooses to tell the truth and clears one more obstacle. In the process, he might just gain a crutch.

Halbrand knew that he would need to accommodate Galadriel in his plans, to arrange matters so that she would come to trust him and care for him more than she already did before she finally, inevitably, found out the truth. And then only from Halbrand himself, in the manner he thought she would take the best, when he felt she was ready to hear it.
Or: Halbrand shows more care in his planning, and Galadriel shows more consideration in her response.
