Fuma turns to leave, and K reaches out without thinking and grabs his hand, causing Fuma to turn around with his head tilted and an inquisitive look on his face.
Stay, K wants to say. Stay here with me.
His mind runs through every variable of the word Stay.
(Don’t leave, sleep in my room tonight, don’t go anywhere, where are you going? Can you stay? Stay with me, not just now, but for as long as I need you. You don’t need to leave. Please. Stay.)
The word weighs on his tongue like a heavy shackle. It’s a light, one-syllable plea, but the consequences behind that one word are far heavier than anything K can bear to think about in his drink-addled state, so he simply says,
“Goodnight.”
Fuma smiles. His eyes are crescents.
“Goodnight,” he replies, and he gently lets go of K’s hand before turning off the lights, walking out, and closing the door behind him.
When K wakes up, his head hurts, and his heart isn’t doing any better.
