Summary
Part one of my Yuletide 2018 installment for fresne: a charming little snapshot of Grendel's relationship with his mother. I kinda just ran with the implications in the text about their demonic/eldritch nature.
I am not a medievalist so this may be WILDLY off-base, but I had fun writing it.
I have an illustration or two to add also, hopefully within the week. :)
Somewhat influenced by the descriptions of draconic intelligence in The Hobbit and Terry Pratchett's books. A cold, ancient sort of intelligence and an almost loveless bond, with less potential for the redemption and forgiveness humans are so fond of in stories.
The other part is the human perspective, with a little more warmth than this one lol.

The “average person eats 3 spiders a year" factoid actually is just statistical error. The average person eats zero spiders per year. Spiders Georg, who lives in cave and eats over 10,000 each day, is an outlier and should not have been counted.

This is my first full-length fanfic.
I grew up watching Doctor Who on PBS in the 80s, so I come from a very Tom Bakerish frame of reference. When the new series begin airing on SciFi earlier this year, I was delighted with the darker, more grown-up place Russell Davies was taking the show, but I had a little trouble reconciling my concept of the Doctor with this new flirtatiousness he was displaying (toward women, men, and trees alike). Much of the fanfic that showed the Doctor hopping into bed with his companions, without going through some kind of process left me disappointed. So, I wanted to search for a believable way he might get there.
There's the exposition. Here's to beginner's luck.

She passed James, who was gently bouncing his way up the hall the opposite way. "I think he's asleep," James mouthed over Harry's tousled head. His hair was the same mess, his head bent down as he peered at his sleeping son.
Lily stopped where she stood, her nephew heavy on her chest, her husband smiling, her sister buried. "James," she said. "How are we going to do this?"
