Something sharpened in the princess's expression. "And what exactly have you heard?"
"That you're clever, difficult and have gone through four royal guards in two years." A pause. "Three by resignation. One by what the records diplomatically describe as reassignment."
"He kept standing directly behind me," the princess quipped. "I could hear him breathing."
"I'll stand in front of you, then."
"You'll stand beside me or this is going to be a very short appointment."
Rio moved. Three steps to the left to be exact, beside the chair and not behind it.
"You're not what I expected," she said.
"Few people are," Rio replied. "What did you expect?"
"Someone my mother could rely on."
