That is to say - it’s Kaveh’s fault. It’s entirely Kaveh’s fault.
Kaveh and Alhaitham touch something that they both ought not have, and end up in each other's bodies. Shit. Somehow, despite the harsh words, harsher looks, and the utter shitshow they find themselves in, they manage to come out of it perhaps understanding each other just a little bit better...

“You’re drunk,” he accuses, barely believing it even as the words leave his mouth.
Alhaitham never gets drunk to the extent that Kaveh can smell it on him. Ever. But it’s as clear as day in the way he’s holding himself, the way his eyes struggle to focus, the flush on his cheeks, the smell of his breath.
Kaveh is the one person in Sumeru City who is most likely to be able to call someone’s bluff when they’re hiding intoxication, so the fact that Alhaitham shakes his head stubbornly at the accusation almost makes him want to laugh. It would have made him laugh if it didn’t make him want to cry.
Everyone has a limit to how far they can stretch themselves, and going beyond that limit has serious consequences. Alhaitham doesn't tend to approach that limit very often, which makes it all the more dangerous when he's pushed past it.

Summary
Kaveh has tried many times to fall in love. And just as many times, he's failed. Now, an upcoming festival may force him to admit to himself that he doesn't feel it - not the romantic kind, at least. And then there are his growing feelings for Alhaitham, which certainly aren't romantic, but aren't entirely platonic, either.
And Alhaitham? He just wants to be close to Kaveh, but that seems impossible when Kaveh keeps misinterpreting his gestures.
