Summary
Sixteen years have passed since Grace arrived on Erid and a new ship has been spotted in the 40 Eridani system, not from Erid and not from Earth. When Grace finds himself an interstellar ambassador between the Eridians and these new aliens, uncomfortable questions arise about whether Grace could ever really be considered Eridian, and whether he might be happier somewhere else...

FRICK I LOVE THISSSSSSS
PTECHROMIA (expresses through colour) meeting ERIDIANS (expressing through sound) and Grace(tm) the guy that can hear and see limitedly lol"Is your program malfunctioning?" Rocky asked bluntly, waving his image-to-texture camera around in annoyance. "This is nothing to me. Random static with random colors." The other two people with image-to-texture cameras signaled their confused agreement.
"I think they're celebrating," Grace said. "They're moving around energetically. And they can change the color of their skin! That's what's making it so hard for you to parse. They're flashing a ton of different colors with no pattern. There are a few Earth animals that can change their skin color, chameleons and some kinds of octopus, as a way of hiding from predators. It’s very rare and very cool to see.”
“Doesn’t human skin also change color?” Rocky asked. “You said your skin turns red when you are hot or embarrassed.”
“That’s different,” Grace said. “That’s involuntary, it’s just a side effect of blood moving around. This appears to be much more pronounced and intentional and fast. That has to be how they communicate in colors! They must have a really precise control over it to use it that way. Wow, that’s gorgeous.”

Summary
"Come on Carl, just one thing! Lokken just got her future memories! Why can't I just know one little thing." Ryland was not above whining to get what he wanted. Everyone kept acting weird once they got the time travel memories! The only explanation was that it had to do with the Hail Mary. He wanted to know why.
"You know the project is going to succeed. Is that not enough." Carl, the traitor, raised an eyebrow like he wasn't affected by Ryland's pleas.
"Ok but what do they find? What are the astronauts going to find up there that we can't replicate?" Ryland asked for the umpteenth time. They were all so tight lipped about it! If they already had the answer why don't they just implement it now, why wait almost thirty years?
Carl just laughed, again, like he always did. "You know, you'd already know that if you remembered it," he teased.
Ryland huffed. Fine then! "When I get my own time-travel memories I wont tell you everything I know, see how you like it!"
Weirdly - It was never anything normal with these people! - Carl just smiled, but it didn't reach his eyes. "I can't wait."
OR
The Petrova Task Force travel back in time one after the other. They forgot to invite Ryland.

Ch1
YES LETS GOOOOORight from the start, he was a fundamentally good man.
“Easy for you to say when you’re not the one being murdered!”
She flinched back from the door at the memory, his scream ringing in her ears. If she went back to Scyther, gave him no choice, she could take him and make him analyse the astrophage. She could slip some hints to another team, convince them to investigate Venus and find out how they breed. It’d be someone else who became the worlds leading expert on astrophage - It would always be astrophage, she would pass no other name to the world leaders - and Dr Grace would be none the wiser. He would just be another face in the crowd. He’d be one out of a million, but he’d be safe.
“Should I really do this?” she asked the empty air.
The air chuckled, wheat-gold hair and sky blue eyes crinkled in amusement. “You already know the answer, you always have. You never needed my advice,” he teased, voice lilting in the same musical tones that underpinned the words of an alien friend.

Summary
Bad dreams suck. Grace wakes up from a nightmare of being on the Hail Mary, which is utterly impossible, but his throat hurts like he really did have a tube pulled out of it.
Turns out, he wasn't the only one to have that dream. Which was even more impossible than him actually being on a ship that's not even fully built.

THE BEST WATCH THE MOVIE FORMAT IVE SEEN
Short but clear rehash of the movie and character reactions that feels grounded (bcs theres cause and effect its so good)“You have a duty to bring Earth your findings,” Stratt said, voice as controlled and calm as ever. “It would be better if you presented them yourself.”
Oh, Grace thought to himself, strangely detached and calmer than he had been in the last few days, she still hoped.
“My duty is to send the Beetles,” he said kindly, words gentle. “That’s why you killed me.” Around them, the others were watching, silent.
Stratt frowned. “You are not dead,” she said. “And you are not going to die. So I do not see how you can use–”
She stopped as Grace raised his hand. It was a very teacher move, but he did it without saying a word, and she fell silent.
“I know how much I lost,” he said, still in that same soft tone. “I can compare what I remember to what he does.” He smiled softly. “If memories make a person, Eva, then Ryland Grace in the dreams is dead. There are maybe a handful of things that made me who I am that we haven’t seen.” He touched his chest, a little surprised at how calm his heart was during this.
“The man in our dreams? He’s me, but he’s not. He’s Grace, and at this point, he’s more Rocky’s Grace of Hail Mary than Ryland Grace of Earth.” He looked at her, seeing the grief that she was hiding in her eyes. “Why would he choose returning to Earth, the ones that sent him out to die, versus saving someone who was willing to die for him?”
She was quiet for a moment. “I should not send you,” she said finally. “You are compromised.”
“But you will,” he said with a smile. “Because you love humanity more than anything. You were willing to kill me for them once before. Now that you know we can make it work, you would never risk that chance.” The smile was soft and gentle, and he never looked away from her. “Besides, this proves that you were -right- after all. I am able to be the person you imagined I could be.”
She leaned back as if he had just attempted to strike her. Maybe he had. The words were not to cause pain, but sometimes the truth hurt just as badly as any physical strike. “This meeting is done,” Stratt said, then stood and left. Grace’s eyes followed her, but he did nothing to stop her.

Summary
Every screen in the room blazed with the same breaking news feed. An alien voice had just asked for him by name on live television.
“Mr. Grace?” little Jamal whispered from the front row, eyes huge behind his glasses. “Is that really you they’re talking about? Like, you you?”
Ryland’s mouth opened, but nothing came out. His heart slammed against his ribs like it wanted to escape and hide under the desk with the class hamster. He was just Mr. Grace. The guy who drew cartoon planets on the board, who stayed late helping kids glue together messy dioramas of the solar system, who once spent an entire lunch period comforting a sobbing girl because her goldfish had “gone to the great fishbowl in the sky.” He graded spelling tests on vocabulary words like photosynthesis and asteroid. Aliens did not know his name. Aliens did not ask for science teachers.
The marker slipped from his fingers and clattered to the floor.

Ch11
THIS EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS
“Hello Earth! I am Rocky from Erid.”
The silence that followed was absolute.
Teddy leaned into the microphone like a man stepping up to a loaded gun, throat dry, pulse hammering in his ears.
“Hello. I am Teddy Sanders from Earth.”
A short, almost polite pause.
Then the reply came, gentle and unwavering:
“Hello human Teddy. Wish to speak with Grace now.”
Then Grace once again gets kidnapped by every government ever

Summary
“You can't be serious?” Carl asks.
“I don't do jokes. And someone has to keep an eye on him.”
He groans and runs a hand over his face.
“But why me?” It won't only be him, he knows. He'll have his team with him, a few trusted agents who he has worked with for years (and who are currently sneakily accepting chocolate covered peanuts from the teacher.)
But this still feels like a personal blow somehow. Did he do something wrong? Is this what he has been reduced to? A glorified babysitter for a scatterbrained teacher?
There is that half smirk on her face, the one that either enamors you or makes you shit your pants, depending on whether or not you are on her good side.
“You told him your name.” Her answer throws him and she can tell. He opens his mouth but she carries on. “Your real name.”
***********
Carl is less than thrilled when he gets reassigned to babysit a teacher playing around with three dots in a glorified warehouse.
But at least this job should be rather uneventful.Boring even.
