“How’s your night been?”
Nai’s brother settles next to him, with his earnest eyes and floppy hair. His tie is loose, his dress shirt wet from dancing, and he’s familiar like an old dream. Legato’s fingers tighten around the head of his cane.
He’s always found it difficult to talk with Vash, disconcerting: Nai’s face, but everything about it means something different.
“It’s nice to see other people happy,” Legato says blandly, and continues eating his wedding cake.

“I know this is all strange to you,” Vash continued, “but we’re so glad you’re here.” He touched Legato’s hand; he felt ill. “Glad you’re alive, glad you’re getting better. You’ve put me through hell but I know you’ve been through hell yourself. You didn’t deserve it.”
Legato wanted to speak. There was so much inside him, something deeper and rawer than anger, silver-quick and punishing. He wanted to punish. He wanted to be punished. He wanted the words he needed to fit his mouth. But his throat burned, and he said nothing.
Vash ran his thumb lightly up and down Legato’s hand.

His eyes are swollen the day of the funeral. In that way it’s like the first time they met. Legato was small, bruise-faced, mostly broken; Nai, with his elegant white hand, had tipped his chin back and looked into his soul.
“Did you want it?” he’d asked.
There were three answers Legato could have given, two real answers if he didn’t play dumb, and he knew even then that his master had no patience for stupidity, even less for people who pretended at it.
“Nothing has ever happened to me that I didn’t want to happen,” Legato said.
And Nai, handsome Nai, looked at him with pleasure in his eyes and smiled.
