The Avatar should be an omnipresent, mediating power, though it's been nearly twenty years since the previous Avatar died and still no successor has arisen. The Avatar definitely should not be Neil Josten, who does not give a single damn about anything but surviving while on the run.

Neil Josten has three (main) problems: he's dealing with the limelight from his father's exposure and arrest, he's about to be kicked out of his dorm, and his best friend's maybe-girlfriend has a best friend slash bodyguard that hates his guts. He can deal with being known as a mafia boss's kid and probably even the imminent threat of homelessness--but the asshole best friend being kind of hot? That's new.

He’s not relapsing tonight. That would be too fucking easy. So fucking easy that Andrew wishes that was the problem. The real problem is an inherited sickness he was condemned with when he wasn’t yet old enough to understand that that kind of love isn’t love. Yet it would sound like a lie if he confesses he doesn’t want to want to relapse anyway. So instead he says, “You’re not safe with me.”
Or Andrew has a nightmare and decides they need to break up; but Neil isn’t going to let him spiral.
