He had wanted the two of them to grow up together, to finish this stupid war together, to figure out adulthood together; where they would go, what they would do, how they would function— he wanted to figure out each step with Jabber by his side.

“Okay,” Ilya says, trying to draw steadying breaths. “Why are you hungry? You did not eat? Drink, I mean?”
Shane continues to shake his head.
“Oh, Shane,” Ilya says, pulling him into his arms. “You have to have blood, no?”
“It kills people. Don’t you care?”
“No,” Ilya says, surprised that it’s not a lie.
