Your attempts to quietly traverse the perimeter was futile with the constant sloshing of liquid. You couldn’t tell whether the restless stir of the substance belonged to you or to some other shadow breathing beside you. Without realizing it, you felt fingers on your throat,incapacitating your esophagus so tightly your vision slowly dimmed until nothing remained.

She'd done this before. She could do it again.
The walker got close and she charged, hitting it with her shoulder the way Vernon had taught her to move cattle when she was twelve. The walker went down hard and she went down with it, knee driving into its chest, hands scrambling for the rock.
She brought it down on the walker's skull. Again. The skull cracked. Again. The skull caved in with a wet crunch and the walker stopped moving but she didn't stop, couldn't stop. She kept bringing the rock down with both hands because she was so fucking tired and so fucking lost and Gran was dead and Sarah was dead and Vernon was alone on a farm she'd never reach and she was never going to be safe, never going to find anywhere, never going to--
"Ain't gonna get any deader."
The voice came from behind her. Male, Southern, cutting through her spiral.
