Slowly, Chrollo reaches out to brush a strand of hair from Kurapika's face. He's surprised when Kurapika allows it, rather than slapping the hand away. At this angle, the flowers on Chrollo's wrist are on full display. "Could it really have been anyone else?"
Kurapika doesn't answer.
Kurapika and Chrollo are soulmates. They fall for each other in spite of this, not because of it.

Luka sighs again. He's been sighing a lot lately, that if he got paid for every time he sighed, he could probably afford a new place to move in somewhere far away from Ivan.
“We've already done that three times. Aren't you tired? And what's even the point? We aren't any different from our usual selves whether we're dating or not.”
“But this time, it's going to be different,” Ivan declares. “Because we're gonna date for real this time.”

Summary
Kurapika knows, objectively, that he tends to let his emotions get the better of him more often than would be considered reasonnable. Most of the time, he blames genetics (the Scarlet Eyes are triggered by strong emotions, after all, so it's a perfectly plausible theory) and leaves it at that. And on the rare occasions he starts to feel guilty about the decisions he made under said emotions, he adds his untreated childhood trauma to the list.
So, all in all, it's not a complete surprise that he makes questionable choices every now and then. Especially when Spiders are involved.

Kurapika died on the Black Whale and woke in the Lukso forest, years before the massacre. His clan was alive. His chains were intact. And somewhere in the smog-choked ruins of Meteor City, the boy who would become the Phantom Troupe's leader was reading a book about the Scarlet Eyes and wondering what they were worth.
If I cannot kill the monster, Kurapika thought, I will have to love it into something else.
Kurapika closed his eyes. Chrollo's fingers were touching his face. His fingertips were cold. Kurapika could feel the faint calluses on Chrollo's index finger and thumb, from holding books, he realised. From turning pages by candlelight.
He leaned in.
The kiss was clumsy. Chrollo tilted his head the wrong way, their noses brushing awkwardly. He made a small, frustrated sound against Kurapika's mouth and adjusted, and the second attempt was better, softer, his lips parting on an inhale like he was surprised this was allowed.
He told himself it was strategy. He kept telling himself that long after strategy stopped being a convincing explanation.

It was decidedly too hard to stay alive after that. Slow burn on Kurapika's end.
