There’s a Russian tradition: write your deepest wish on paper, burn it at midnight, swallow the ashes in champagne. For ten years, Ilya Rozanov has written the same name. This New Year’s Eve, with his husband in his arms, he has nothing left to wish for.

    Summary

When Shane takes a hard hit on the ice, he wakes up three days later to find his reality has been shattered. But the truth is, it wasn’t reality at all. Just an elaborate set of false memories conjured by a brain injury. 'False memory syndrome' they call it. Shane calls it a nightmare he couldn't have imagined.

    Or

Shane doesn’t have amnesia. Instead, he wakes up wanting his boyfriend only to realize his brain concocted a bunch of fake memories of a nine year situationship and Shane has no idea how to live in his actual reality that Ilya hasn’t been a part of. Luckily, Ilya is…curious.

    Summary

And yeah, Shane knew that Ilya hadn’t been okay last time he was in Russia, but Ilya had had the very real excuse of a funeral to blame things on. Ilya had downplayed it as much as he could, and Shane hadn’t been there, he’d heard the fatigue and he’d seen Ilya’s tired smile, but he hadn’t felt the way Ilya’s hands were cold the entire time he was there, hadn’t seen through the screen the way Ilya dropped eight pounds in three weeks, hadn’t kept time when there were twenty hours in Ilya’s day instead of something closer to sixteen. Or, on the flip side, for the week or two after, when there had been approximately ten conscious hours in a day.

It was one thing to see something. It was another to feel it in your hands.

Ilya and Shane are so, so happy for their first year married. They’re playing in Ottawa together, they’re fucking winning, they’re together and out.

So now, after a year, Ilya should be fine. He should be great. He should not be flinching at small noises or nearly punching people off the clock or feeling like he’s drowning whenever he’s not on the ice.

Or: Ilya Rozanov, meet your PTSD.

    Summary

Shane is in a post-game interview when his world stops.

He’s just answered a question about Montreal’s offensive strategy going into the game. Clean passes, avoid penalties, draw defenders wide. It had worked and the Voyagers had beat Colorado soundly, 4-1. Shane had scored two of the goals and assisted on a third.

Usually, Shane would be eager to boast about the win to Ilya. But ever since their fight- since Ilya told Shane to leave- winning feels hollow. Losing feels better, somehow. As if Shane deserves to lose after being so selfish. Ilya gave up everything for him- his home, his team, and to some extent- his happiness. Hockey. Ilya gave up hockey- good hockey- for Shane.

A ripple goes through the room of reporters. Shane swears he hears the word ‘Ottawa’ and ‘crash’. But no one is paying attention to him anymore.

“What’s going on?” he asks into the microphone, feeling strange at the role reversal. Usually, he’s the one being asked questions.

No one answers. And this time he knows that he hears the word ‘Ottawa’ and ‘Centaurs’.

    ------------------------------------------

Shane rushes to Ilya after the almost plane crash. Their secret is no longer a secret.

    Summary

“It’s all about their weaknesses,” the coach’s voice echoes through the stadium. “This is Ottawa, they hardly have any strengths aside from their goalie and Ilya Rozanov. The rest of the team isn’t much to be concerned about.”

“That’s offensive,” a voice cuts through the speech.

Everyone looks up to find Ilya Rozanov standing a few feet away. Nonchalantly leaning against a pillar and looking fucking hot while doing it. Shane mentally whacks himself for letting his mind drift anywhere close to the boundary that he has set up for while being on the ice. No thought of how hot his fiancé is or what he wants to–

Hayden nudges him hard. Everyone is looking at him, but he has no idea what happened, too lost in his own thoughts because of Ilya fucking Rozanov.

“I said,” Ilya’s voice sounds, and in an instant Shane’s eyes are on his fiancé again. “I’d like to have a word with your captain.”

OR: Ilya picks Shane up after practice, with the idea of having lunch with his fiancé. They run into some Centaurs and Shane, although he may deny it, gets a little jealous of how affectionate they're allowed to be with his fiancé. Biting his tongue is getting increasingly more difficult.
