Summary
His face is pale. Lips curled up in a grotesque smile. Torn up the cheeks, oozing blood that drips onto the cement floor. One hand rips at his dark hair, greasy and limp over manic eyes. The other hangs at his side, limply clinging to a gun. “Ha ha ha-” Half frantic laughter, half distraught sobs that rattle through his chest.
Between them, the Joker’s body. Blood blossoming around his head. Brain matter spattered on the floor. Smiling. Eyes vacantly staring up at the ceiling.
“Hahahahaha-”
Bruce approaches slowly. Like he’s approaching a skittish animal. “Tim,” he says softly, and the boy blinks at him, still laughing, still sobbing. There are tears in his eyes. “Tim, put down the gun.”

Summary
The thunder booms again and he flinches deeper into the mattress, then curls his chin down to get off the growing damp spot on his pillowcase.
He has to go get Alfred. He has to make sure he’s okay—but suppose he isn’t, suppose somebody has killed him or Alfred has choked on something in the library or tripped down the stairs and snapped his neck—Bruce can see the bone sticking out now, shining as bright as marquee lights in the dark.
He closes his eyes for a moment only to see black wings dipping lower and lower, and snaps them open.

Summary
Bruce never gets sick. Until he does. And then he thinks he's contracted some supervirus because he never gets sick.
“Have you stopped to consider that it’s just your turn to get a cold?” Dick asked. “I can remember it happening a few times over the years.”
“Colds don’t work that way. They don’t arbitrarily decide who to bring down next,” Bruce growled as his vision blurred.
