Goro sighed. “It’s not that simple. An international trip is quite an undertaking. The timing isn’t right. We can’t just up and leave tomorrow. You know I’m moving next weekend.”
“I didn’t say anything about leaving tomorrow,” Akira laughed. “Spring break is coming up for me in two months, and your boss has been begging you to use your stockpiled vacation days, so let’s plan for it.”
“Where would we even go?”
A tug on a dormant part of Akira’s heart led him to say, “France. We can visit a few cities. Have the best seafood you can imagine in Marseille, visit the Alps by Lyon, and maybe end in Paris.”
“I didn’t realize you were a French connoisseur.” Goro pulled Akira closer and whispered, “All of that sounds awfully romantic.”
“Is that a bad thing?” Pushing Goro flat on his back, Akira crawled over him. He bracketed his arms on either side of Goro’s head and leaned down to kiss him softly. “We’ll get you moved into your new apartment first,” he said against Goro’s lips. “Then we’ll make our escape.”

A human cry from behind Goro catches him by surprise. Akira.
Goro whirls around just as the heel of the shadow’s scythe collides with Akira’s head. Akira staggers backward. The blade strikes again, tearing through Akira’s arm. Blood sprays onto the ground as Akira collapses to one knee.
Time freezes. Akira glares up at the Macabre poised to reap with a face draining of color. Blood streams down from Akira’s hairline, glazing his white mask crimson. His arm is a landscape; blood runs from rounded peaks of muscle, like a river flowing downhill from the mountains, pouring into his curled palm, and trickling into the ocean of mist he kneels in.
Goro sees red. He has no options left.

“You're there, aren't you Ake”--the door to Leblanc nearly shattered on its hinges with the force of which it was thrown open--“chi-kun!?” Maruki stuttered out, his face swiftly morphing from melancholic to bewildered in the span of a second as he openly gawked at the entryway.
Akira blinked once. Did a double take. Then blinked once more.
Because it wasn’t Akechi who had just stormed into Leblanc.

“You,” a man who looked like the spitting image of a twenty-something, utterly irate Goro Akechi spat, his face contorting into a feral grimace as he pointed directly at Maruki.
There was a beat of absolute silence.
And then chaos erupted.
