Summary
Mason grins and he’s so fucking tired his fangs slip.
Kat’s heart starts racing and her pupils dilate. Oh, it’s too easy.
But then her expression softens and she slips her arm out from under her head (doesn’t move the hand touching his) and reaches out hesitantly. “Can I touch?”
“If you want,” he says, and it’s his turn to get all affected as she cups the side of his face and runs the calloused pad of her thumb over his bottom lip, touches the tip of his fang gently, so fucking gently, in a way no one has before. In a way he’s never let anyone before.
Their eyes meet, hold, and he nips her. Not hard enough to break the skin, but he’s not sure if he means it as a warning or an invitation.

Summary
Nate traces a finger down the page. “The spell requires three people in communication...”
“Right…” Kat prompts when he trails off again.
“Well, it’s not quite communication, the way I was translating it. It’s actually… ah…” Nate runs a hand through his hair, searching for words in a very un-Nate-like fashion. “Ah… communion.”
Kat frowns. “Like the church thing?”
“No… Not quite like the church—”
Mason claps his hands together and cackles, burying his face against her shoulder before flopping back against the couch.
“Are you—” He wipes his eye, dissolves into laughter again. “Are you saying that summoning a desire demon requires a threesome?”
____________Why yes, yes he is.

Summary
I spoke of victory and the word lodged in my throat; too big, and too foreign.
I wish instead I could have spoken of dirt. The dirt that was taken from us, and the dirt we are owed, and the dirt we are buried in.
The dirt that knew the tread of my people’s feet and the sweat of our brows before it knew the taste of our blood and the salt of our tears.

Summary
“Hands,” she whispers without breaking eye contact. “Have to keep things professional tonight.”
“Do we?” Mason drops his hand, slowly, caressing her bare arm as he does so. “I thought tonight was a party, sweetheart.”
“Ah, you were misled. This is several hours of forced socialization with all the town employees, including my co-workers, my boss, and my boss’s boss, plus we get the added bonus of jumping through whatever hoops Rebecca and the Agency have set out for us.”
“Wow, you’re really selling this.”
The corner of her mouth curves up. “I’ll see what I can do to make it more interesting for you."
Spoiler: Kat does indeed manage to make it more interesting. Also the gang attends a holiday party and Felix discovers photo booths.

SB: I’m thinking of you.
SB for Sexy Bastard, the way she first entered Mason's contact info, and while she’s considered changing it since then, it’s remained shockingly fitting through all the permutations of their relationship.
K: Discreetly I hope
SB: professionally too
Spoiler alert: It's neither discreet nor professional.
Or: Phone sex with Mason. At the station.

I was looking up, and did not see him. He was looking down, his nose buried in his book, and did not see me. We collided. And amidst a shower of apologies, and breathless laughter, and the gathering of notes and museum maps shaken loose, a seed was planted.

In which Nepenthe and Abelas exchange letters, and "language lessons" are a metaphor for something else entirely... and Abelas is very good at innuendo.

Summary
A friendly competition turns into a Moment.
A flower is a metaphor. He nearly told her about the nuanced meanings that these flowers had held, a language spoken in colors. Yellow for the warmth of friendship, white for sympathy, peach for gratitude, purple for the first flush of enchantment, and red—red for love. For the kind of love that set down roots, and sunk into the soil of your soul, and made a garden of your heart. That kind of love. That kind of red.

Summary
A little interlude of Abelas and Nepenthe walking in the Hinterlands.
Some cherry blossoms are a metaphor.“They always remind me of snow when the wind blows.” And because she could not wait for the universe to bend to her wishes, she reached out and tugged on the end of a branch, sending a shower of white-pink petals fluttering over them. Nepenthe closed her eyes as the petals swept over her eyelashes and caught in the curls of her hair. One stuck on her cheek and he cupped her face in his palm and brushed it away with his thumb, like a wayward tear. At his touch, she opened her eyes and smiled and for a moment she was made of light and the scent of flowers. He leaned in slowly, sure that something so ephemeral and rare would fall apart in an instant, scattering to the wind like dropped petals.

Summary
Inspired in equal part by my headcanon that Abelas just really loves potatoes and the true story of how Frederick II of Prussia rebranded the lowly potato as a royal vegetable as a simple way to feed his nation.
(When the peasants resisted growing this dirty, bland tuber, the king planted a royal field with potato plants and set his guards to protect them - but also instructed them to pretend not to notice if local peasants tried to steal from the garden. Before long, peasants started stealing these “royal potatoes” and growing them in secret. Boom. Success.)Anyway, Abelas got the guarding duty but missed the memo about ignoring the intruders.
