Eddie bats his hand away, laughing. His chest aches, and there's a pressure in his sinuses like he might cry, but the laughter keeps bubbling up anyway. "Are you twelve?"
"Come on," Buck says, and does it again, leaving a matching mark on Eddie's other shoulder, a burst of suds sinking into the fabric of his t-shirt. He's shifting closer, a cocky tilt to his chin, something sparking in his smile, and it's exhaustion, maybe, or relief, or that joy that shatters just a little too close to grief, but the air feels suddenly tense and thrumming. Not angry, not the way it was the other night. This is something else. Eddie can't help leaning into it, straightening out of his slouch, taking a half-step closer like something is tugging behind his sternum, and Buck must clock that, because he grins, sharp and challenging. "You're not even a little curious?"

Eddie Diaz, his best friend, his straight best friend, is sitting at a table, at the cafe Buck is supposed to meet his blind date at, wearing the brown jacket with a flower in his pocket that his blind date is supposed to be wearing and it’s just not making a lot of sense.
Or, Buck goes on a blind date. Impossibly, so does Eddie.

Summary
Eddie feels his own eyes prickling as Buck’s cries turn into heavier sobs, his breath gasping between each as if there’s not enough oxygen in the world.
“Eddie,” his fingers are clenching at Eddie’s shirt now, holding him tighter, closer. “Eddie, why – why –”
“I don’t know,” Eddie whispers into his hair, lips grazing along Buck’s hairline with every word. “I don’t know. I’m so sorry.”
“And – and you –” Buck trails off, even though Eddie desperately wants to hear what Buck has to say. He wants Buck to yell at him and tell him off for leaving, wants him to scream at him for being a terrible friend just so Eddie can feel – something. Anything. “You came back.”

Every time Eddie steps through this front door he feels like a little kid again.
Or, not quite. Not exactly. He never had a chance to be a child in this house, after all. But he feels small again. Insignificant. Like only half of a person. It makes his shirt stick to the clammy skin of his back, and his heart beat just that little bit too fast. It makes him long for a different home - a different family - back in LA, where Eddie matters. Where people care about him, and not just the messes he creates.
But he’ll do this for Christopher. He’ll grit his teeth and he’ll grin and bear it, taking every underhanded comment and every brazen insult like a man who knows how it feels to be shot. Who knows what it takes to survive it.

Evidence: He’s clenching his jaw to the point of pain and very pointedly looking at the TV, like the local weatherman spouting off about a heat wave is capable of holding this much of his attention. If this were—before, they would not be watching the news.
...or, Eddie could just use his words, but where’s the fun in that?
