Kafka has never been easy to know. She is aware of this. She has, in fact, spent considerable effort ensuring it — the careful warmth, the well-timed deflection, the doors kept mostly shut. It is not loneliness. It is simply a life with appropriate margins, and she has long since stopped wishing it were otherwise.
And then Himeko, who researches restaurants before she boards the plane and remembers throwaway things said months ago and shows up without pressure and stays without being asked, looks at all of it — every guarded corner of her, every door kept mostly shut — and stays anyway.
