(Or, Zack does some escaping and some surviving and a whole lot of traveling, all with a comatose Cloud on his back)

Cloud has spent his whole life in a tower in the Nibel mountains, watching the world through his window and waiting for his mother to decide the world is safe enough for him. Every year on his birthday, he sees floating lights go up in the sky, and he desires nothing more than to go see them in person. Just before his twenty-first birthday, he finally tells his mother about his dream--and she admits that he will never be free to go. Well, Jenova isn't always around, and when an outsider breaks into the tower looking for refuge, Cloud decides to embrace his dreams.

When Cloud Strife fell in action, everyone was just happy to hear he survived. For Cloud though, he wonders if there are worse things than being dead.
Years of his life are gone. No memories. Nothing. Not to mention that his mind barely seems able to function normally ever since he woke up. He's not sure if he'll ever be normal again, or if he'll ever remember what he lost. He can only hope to have a new life worth remembering. Even if he may never be cleared for military duty again. Hopefully his friends can help him find new dreams to live for.

It wasn't official; there was no signage. But SOLDIERs who stumbled up to the fences at the Chocobo Farm found a warm, safe welcome away from the bustle of the world, and could stay as long as they needed, so long as they agreed to help out with chores and odd jobs. Choco Bill allowed as how that was a kindness maybe the world owed the haunted, troubled, wounded young men who darkened his doorstep.
The last two to arrive weren't quite the same as the others, though.
