Someone put a comforting hand on his shoulder, but Carl barely felt it. No one had to tell him what part of the prison his dad had stalked off to — with a face full of grief and armed with nothing but an axe.
Nor did Carl need to say what they’d all been thinking.
That Lori — his mom — was dead. And that her blood was on his hands.

Carl deals with the burden of his mother’s death. He can bear it alone, he thinks. That impossibly heavy load.
Until he can’t.

Then Nathan spoke softly.
“Can I tell you something, Boon?”
“Not if it's more self-loathing."
Nathan chewed his lip. “What about the truth?”
Boon glanced at him.
Nathan looked exhausted in a way no fourteen-year-old ever should.
“Alright,” Boon murmured. “Shoot.”
Nathan leaned back in his seat, hands clasped tightly together. He stared up at the roof of the car like he could somehow see the night sky through it. If Boon hadn’t known better, he would’ve thought the kid was praying.
Or confessing.
Finally, he breathed out, “I killed my mom.”

Or, Nathan runs from his past until he can't. It doesn’t take much for Boon to realize he’s done the same.

Summary
The Afton kids are grown and have moved far from Hurricane in order to avoid their father getting out of prison. Especially with Lizzie being a mother now. They couldn’t still be in the same town as that man with a child.
So they moved, and now Cassie is turning nine. They hold a birthday party for her, but the name of the Afton’s follow them even when their newest member doesn’t share the same name. No one showed up to her party.
Except for one, much too thin, boy.

Summary
All Gregory wanted was a warm place to sleep and some (stolen) food, but he ends up being hunted down by murderous animatronics and security guards alike, having to quite literally fight for his life, and he can’t escape no matter what he does — given that time keeps resetting whenever he dies.
Maybe this all has to do with what’s hiding in the basement, and everything else that’s haunting the Pizzaplex … too bad for them, Gregory isn’t going to give up on this.
