I could tell that Eight Nought wasn't all that excited about the thought of me leaving; we'd had more "random" security drills in the last fifty cycles than we'd had in the entirety of my contract up to that point. Seriously, I could recite the protocol for dealing with raiders in my sleep by the end - if you're boarded, try overpowering them; if they're too heavily armed, try to reason with them; if they aren't interested in negotiating, remain calm, send a distress signal, and hope for rescue.
And yet, no amount of drilling actually prepared me for having a raider casually stroll onto the control deck.
