Summary
The world blinks, and four of the five Lugunican Royal Candidates — alongside a handful of their closest attendants — are spirited to a room outside of time and space. There is an odd meteor front and center, and a glass jar to their left that has locked one of their dear comrades just out of arm’s reach.
A demonstration focused on the Unsung Hero, Natsuki Subaru, begins — and the meteor comes to life.

Kenichi was never going to let Subaru rot away in his room forever.
It was fine if he didn’t want to go back to school, but he couldn’t just give up on life altogether — no son of Natsuki Kenichi could be allowed to do THAT! And so, Kenichi had dragged his beloved child out by the ear, forced him into an internship by his side, and transformed him into a responsible, working adult just in time for time his eighteenth birthday.
And then, just as Subaru was feeling like his life finally had some real hope in it, he had been stolen away.

Summary
"I don't have the option of being appreciated," Reinhard said. "I have the option of being useful. Those are different things."
When Natsuki Subaru is summoned to Lugunica, he expects a standard fantasy adventure. Instead, he gets beat up in a dirty alleyway, only to be saved by Reinhard van Astrea—a man universally despised by the Kingdom as a monster.
Through a bloody encounter at a Loot House, Subaru, the slum thief Felt, and Old Man Rom find themselves "guests" of the Astrea Estate. But the estate is a gilded cage ruled by Heinkel Astrea, a patriarch who uses bureaucracy, isolation, and suffocating politeness to keep his son a broken weapon and his new Royal Candidate a hostage.
Stripped of all leverage and forced to work as a junior butler, Subaru quickly realizes that dying to assasins is the easy part. The hard part is breaking the conditioning of a god who has been taught to say "Thank you, Father" for his own abuse. You can't punch a system. You can't fight a load-bearing wall. But Natsuki Subaru has never been the kind of person to let that stop him.
