Summary
Jaskier knows that he's being hunted. He knows, eventually, he will be captured. He knows too much about Geralt-- about Witchers in general-- to get caught without proper preparation. So he sets out, looking for Witchers to entrust with the things he values most. The things he can't let Nilfgaard get their hands on.
It's in his nature to play tricks, to steal. And stealing from the White Flame is fun. Until his mind slowly decends into madness.

After birthing himself from a fresh grave lifetime-decades ago, Jaskier has played the bard across the continent. He is content because he is who he chooses to be: safely forgettable; a weed who makes music.

There was a minor problem with Ithlinne's Prophecy.
Emhyr var Emreis was convinced it was about him.
Vilgefortz wanted power.
Several kings, mages, prophets, scholars, and at least one particularly enthusiastic cult were also convinced it was about them.
None of them were correct.
Geralt of Rivia was trying his best.
Sigismund Dijkstra was trying very hard to locate one missing bard before the Continent collapsed.
And Jaskier—
Jaskier wanted absolutely nothing to do with any of it, thank you very much.
He wanted songs. Stories and Adventure. A certain white-haired witcher and preferably in that order.
Unfortunately, Destiny had read the prophecy.
And, like everyone else, it enjoyed a good joke.
Or:
How Jaskier accidentally became immortal, united the races of the Continent, dismantled an empire, fulfilled an ancient prophecy, inherited a kingdom he did not want, and spent most of the process attempting to seduce one (1) white-haired witcher while actively avoiding his own coronation.

Summary
Jaskier is a genie that has been “freed” from his “bottle” which is bits and pieces of his lute. He isn’t truly free but enough to not actually care about being a genie. He's been traveling the world doing whatever. Upon meeting Geralt, he pretends to be a normal bard as he does with everyone but every now and then when Geralt wants something it just seems to be easier to get it. Sometimes when it’s a close call with a monster, any healing supplies are always nearby, sometimes they always have the right amount of coin, sometimes Jaskier just knows exactly what is needed for any given situation
Sometimes Jaskier and Geralt split paths and Geralt notices how his luck seems to better when his little strange bard is around.
I swear it gets so much better the further in you get
