Summary
Tony had a red star on his left shoulder, the mark of a dead man. James Buchanan Barnes’s soulmark, after all, was a matter of public record. Even though he died in World War II, Tony somehow had his mark branded on his skin.
He grew up with the knowledge that the unconditional love of a soulmate would never be for him. He didn’t care; soulmates were bullshit, anyway. His parents, united with a narcissus on their collarbones, were proof of that.
Tony’s soulmate was long dead, and Tony was totally fine with that. Really, he was.
Of course, the universe had to fuck him over in the most dramatic possible way.

As an empath, he is at the government's disposal the hunt down the country's most terrifying of killers, all the while maintaining the barriers within his own mind. After a dangerous run-in with the notorious Minnesota Shrike, he is put on probation, tasked with being babysat by a therapist to better ensure his mental stability.
Hannibal Lecter, babysitter, isn't like other neurotypicals, though. Will can't read him the way he can anyone else. On his best of days, he'd almost call the good doctor interesting.

The next time Will glanced to his left, the Gentleman was there. He wore a suit, as always, with dark leather shoes that stayed pristine no matter how muddy the ground was. The tie knotted high around his throat, emerald silk embroidered with a twining pattern that seemed to shift and twist as Will’s eyes moved over at it, was the brightest spot of color in the forest. He didn’t wear a coat. December in Virginia wasn’t nearly cold enough to trouble one of the winter fae.
