Summary
18 months after Vecnas downfall and the destruction of the Upside down Mike Wheeler finds himself just going through the motions of life. He just graduated high school and everyone around him seems to have their lives worked out. His friends are going to different colleges and moving out of state to get as far as the possibly can away from Hawkins. People he's spent his whole life with are leaving and he just can't. He feels tethered to this place, like there's an invisible chain linking him to Hawkins so he can't leave.
So what happens when his best friend stops at the base of the stairs, looks him dead in the eyes and tells him he has to wake up? When the fogginess surrounding his head is lifted and revealed to not just be grief, but preventing him from seeing reality. Mike realizes the last 18 months of his life haven't been real, but he doesn't know when reality became warped and when his carpet became yellow. He also, doesn't know how to escape and put a stop to this psychological madness.

“How did you know to kiss me?” His voice comes out barely above a whisper, but Avery acts as if he spoke loudly. The slime flinches at the question, teal blush blooming on his face like how it did when they originally.. Nevermind that. Avery steps back, smile turning into something different. Nervous. His eyes wander the room, the eye contact he kept before seeming to fail him now. “Avery?” He presses, confused by the silence.
That seems to snap the slime out of his thoughts, because Avery’s eyes lock back onto D3rlord. He swallows before briefly clearing his throat. “Ya know.. that’s the funny thing.” He starts, left hand reaching up to scratch behind his head before it drags down and rests at the back of his neck. Avery lets out a weak laugh, but before Derek feels pushed to ask the question again Avery continues. “I actually had no clue if it’d work.” He smiles big at Derek, but there’s not much substance behind it.
