There it was. Eda couldn’t help her smile shrinking, something twisting around inside her at the fear her new customer was trying so hard to hide. She had been through this whole song-and-dance more than once, and it never got any easier, but she knew she had to try and get the kid to trust her; this whole thing was far more daunting for them than it ever could be for her.
“So,” she said, softening her tone just a little, “I’m guessing you’re not whatever gender your family thinks you are, right?”
