“What are you doing?” Qifrey looked up to find Olly standing in the hall, one eyebrow slightly quirked.
Qifrey meant to say he was fine, that he was just remembering their days as apprentices, that Agott was settling in well, or even that Olly was so good with her.
What he actually said was, “what if she drowns in the bath?”

"Master Olruggio! We need help! Master Olruggio!"
He blinks once, processing the cry, then flips out of his hammock, scrambling for the door.
Tetia and Agott are on the other side, Tetia in tears and Agott looking…almost frightened.
"Master Qifrey's passed out in his room and he won't wake up!" Tetia says, voice wobbling.
Olruggio shoves past the girls and runs.

Beside him, Olruggio pulled his scarf higher over his face. It didn’t quite hide the blush that had bloomed across his face at the implication. Qifrey glanced sideways at him, amused.
“My, Olly,” He spoke lightly, lowering his voice just enough that only Olruggio could hear him, “you look as though you’ve been proposed to.”
Olruggio shot him a glare entirely lacking real heat before bumping his shoulder roughly against Qifrey’s.
“Keep walkin’.”
Qifrey’s laughter disappeared into his scarf. As they trudged along, Qifrey’s attention drifted elsewhere. His gaze had settled on the village ahead. He remembered this place well. Years ago, he and Olruggio had once been assigned a mission here together. But the tree… he didn’t remember it being so large. Qifrey’s brows knit together. Orla said that the elders here knew and remembered the voice and that it was that of a witch from seventy years ago… No ordinary preservation spell should have remained active for that long. Who could have activated a spell?
A strange unease curled beneath his ribs.
