    Summary

In fifteen years of marriage, Alicent has never met her stepdaughter Rhaenyra - the daughter her husband Viserys cherished more than he ever did his other children. But the evasive Rhaenyra eventually resurfaces - during Viserys' funeral.
As Alicent tries to navigate her new life as a widowed mother, she also tries to navigate her new and strange relationship to the walking mystery that is Rhaenyra. Family, strangers, friends, enemies: what are they to one another? What could they be?
Maybe things could go well, if only Viserys - dead as he might be - didn't manage to ruin it all from beyond the grave.

OR: a meet-cute at a funeral, followed by a tense legal dispute about Viserys' freakin' will (because isn't that the modern-day equivalent to what happened in the show?)

    “You look tired,” Rhaenyra said.

Alicent could not suppress a snort in time. “I was just sick, if you recall,” she said.

“I mean in general. You look… bone weary. You've looked like this for a while.”

Alicent let out a laugh that sounded like a sigh.

“I've been told I seem to be glowing from happiness,” she replied wryly.

Rhaenyra paused and looked intently at Alicent. “Are you?”

“Am I what?,” came Alicent's clipped answer. She felt a familiar itch at her fingernails, and resisted the urge to hide her hands under her skirt.

“Happy,” Rhaenyra did not look away from her face. “Are you happy about getting married?”

“Any maiden would naturally be happy to be getting married,” Alicent smiled and tried not to choke on the words. She hoped Rhaenyra would realize she was uncomfortable and stop pressing the issue. It was not Rhaenyra's nature to be merciful, however.

“But are you happy, Alicent?” she asked once again. Alicent could not remember when was the last time she had heard the Princess speak her name.

“Uhm, Master Lan…” he starts to say but is halted by fingers on his lips.

Jiang Cheng blinks, incredulous at the liberties that the drunk Lan is taking.

“Shh…Shufu says one must be patient. You wouldn’t want to go against Shufu, would you?”

Lan Xichen’s eyes are wide and full of worry as he looks at Jiang Cheng, as if Jiang Cheng defying anything Shufu says will be the worst thing to happen. As if any of the Lan rules apply to Jiang Cheng at Yunmeng Jiang.

(Or the one where Lan Xichen flirts shamelessly, Jiang Cheng just wants to be left alone, Wei Wuxian is an all-knowing gremlin, and everyone gossips.)

"That was weird," Merlin says, chirpily, and the knights laugh, as if they don't know that Merlin just almost died, just would have died, if it hadn't been for his -

    Arthur takes a deep breath.

    He's not thinking about it.

    Summary

Arthur was having a terrible day.

Merlin had been late (a phenomenon so common it hardly bore remarking upon) and had nicked all of Arthur’s sweetmeats, training was called off due to a light drizzle his knights insisted on calling a thunderstorm, Merlin dropped half of Arthur’s armor on his foot, and now there was apparently a murderer in the castle.

And, what’s worse, Merlin had disappeared and hadn’t been seen in hours.
