Summary
This pain was internal - not in the same way that his lungs had burned after his momentary dance with death - it was excruciatingly internal. As if someone had ripped his heart clean out, had decided that wasn't enough, and had then climbed within the empty spot where his heart had been and replaced it with themselves.
Todd knew this hadn't happened, had told himself that it was nothing like that whilst knowing that it was also completely alike to it. Because Todd Anderson was in love, and it was abnormal, and it was bad and sinful, and he would never have the pleasure of reciprocation.

Summary
Neil knew, better than anyone, that Todd Anderson was special. Ethereal, even. He was warm and earnest and gentle in a school that, most days, was more excrement than excellent.
It should have come as no surprise when someone else seemed to come to that same realisation.
It was fine. Todd deserved the recognition. Neil wasn’t jealous.
Not at all.
