“Poor thing, can I buy you a drink?” The unfamiliar voice was warm, sweet on the ears, and terribly close.
Tav’s eyes snapped open, hauled out of his thoughts by the sudden, unexpected proximity. He hadn’t heard the elf’s approach. Again, their gazes met, and now he could see those eyes.
They were crimson, the light from the fireplace flickering orange hues into their depths like rubies and liquid marigolds dancing together. For a moment, Tav forgot how to breathe, holding his breath in until his lungs ached for air and his world was reduced to those eyes and the taste of his blood on his tongue.
Trust no one. The words are more than a warning. For Aithanis Tavernsong, they’re a creed. Guild member, spy, and bard of purposefully little renown, Tav has navigated the sociopolitical web of the city’s underworld his whole life.
But when he’s plucked out of the city and dropped in the middle of gods-know-where, Tav is thrust into a leadership role, struggling to make sense of the world outside the city. Every step draws him ever closer to the pale elf, a familiar stranger with secrets woven into every glance.
