Summary
There’s someone in the house.
Maddie freezes halfway down the stairs, her hand pressing flat to the wall for balance as she stutters a step.
Downstairs, the TV light flickers blue out of the living room and into the hallway, spreading over the floor and catching on a trail of bootprints leading in from the cracked-open front door.
Laughter from the TV breaks the quiet. Maddie follows the trail of bootprints down the hall and towards the kitchen.
The door was shut, she’s sure of it.

She tries to move, but a sharp pang of resistance in her wrists reminds her that she is bound, though not with chains. Silk ties hold her hands together in her lap, soft but firm, knotted just tight enough to remind her of her place.
The door swings open.
He enters without hurry, without hesitation. A man who clearly owns the space around him. Tall, broad-shouldered, dressed in dark, crisp lines that contrast against the warmth of the room. His gray eyes make a piercingly, unreadable lock onto her, and for the first time, Evelyn feels something deeper than dread. Panic.
He studies her like an artist appraising a new canvas. No, not an artist. A collector. For a long moment, neither of them speak. He takes his time, studying her, assessing her, observing something that he already considers his. She can feel that she belongs to him now.
Finally, he speaks. “The pleasure’s all mine.”
