Charles knew that Edwin was out of it.
Edwin was staring into space, detached, that terrifying look in his eye that Charles hated that he recognized.
He would start running, if Charles didn't say anything. Edwin would then hide, and Charles would have no chance to get to him.
And that simply couldn't happen, not with the pieces of iron stuck in him, large chunks buried in his body.
Charles wished Edwin at least screamed, but he was silent.

Summary
Charles always wanted to give hugs like that, full of warmth and love. Ones that made you feel like you were one and the same, melding together until pulling away felt like an impossibility. Dying sorta put that on hold, yeah? Edwin didn't seem the hugging type and Charles respected that. But well... desperate measures and all.

Edwin's bent neatly at the waist, scrutinising the etchings on the doorstep like they hold all the secrets of the universe. Rain patters down, around and through him, bouncing off the paving stones, and wind brushes through the trees.
Charles tucks his hands into his pockets, hunching his shoulders in and suppressing a shiver.

A new show opens at Milleflora Opera House, but each night someone in the audience falls asleep during the performance, dreams unusually realistic dreams, and dies by morning, leaving distraught ghosts behind. It should be a straightforward case....right up until it isn't.
Edwin does not like coincidences—he believes the world simultaneously too random and too orderly—but he accepts that they do, on occasion, happen. But this morning brought a third ghost to their door in as many days, this time only minutes after the sun has even risen. A third ghost to have slept and dreamt and died before sunrise at the very same opera, well.
That is most emphatically not a coincidence.
Charles nods his agreement. “So we’re taking them all on, then. One big case.”
“Indeed.”

As for other aspects of the feast . . . Elves were meant to love the stars from afar, not to dwell among them, and there are some things that Legolas will never get used to.

"Crystal? Edwin?" A voice calls, but it sounds far away. It's so familiar, a name is on the tip of her tongue but she can't focus with the bruising touch of her friend and the horrors that surround her. "Crystal, come on! What am I supposed to—"
There is something skittering towards them, soft giggles filling the silence.
"Crystal!" The voice calls again, sounding closer now. "Edwin! You guys have to—" the voice is clearer, as if they are inside this gruesome labyrinth with the two of them.
"—come back!" Crystal is jolted back to reality. A long, shuddering gasp leaving her lips as she attempts to take a breath in. She is in the office, her face damp with tears and sweat. She is still cupping Edwin's cheeks.
Edwin, who is staring at her, is faring no better. He is no longer bloody, but tears are streaming down his face and snot is dripping from his nose. He shakes in her hold— or maybe, she is the one shaking. She cannot tell. "Edwin," she calls between gasps. "Edwin, oh my god—"

Simon had never actually seen Edwin be taken by the demon, he had two parallel stories running through his head at all times. He had killed Edwin and doomed him to an eternal suffering or he had only got four other boys killed and Hell was their punishment, Edwin, poor innocent - wouldn’t hurt a fly, book loving - Edwin was spared because demons only came for sinners. In which case, Edwin couldn’t be down here and Hell’s tricks had led him far beyond the confines of his assigned recompense.
