Summary
In the Ancient Age, around -1600, the Neromenians found a new god, and with this god came the power to sink entire cities into the earth. The Inghirsh had held them off this long, sending back 'ten thousand spearmen' on their shields. But, their new god promised them victory at last.
Eight or ten years after Inquisition (somewhere in the vicinity of 9:50 Dragon), Kinnon finally goes back to investigate the ancient city beneath the Silent Plains. The spirits trapped beneath the earth are fearful and angry, but they're slowly fading away, memories lost to the passage of time, however intact the city might be. It takes the aid of two magisters to get permission to dig, and the ground still bears the Taint across the Plains, where Dumat fell, but Kinnon is intent on uncovering the past.

This holiday season, Vexation of Spirit brings you family bullshit, with a side of murder and malfeasance.
A strange system failure at Idlewood is preventing access to parts of patient and employee records, and it falls to Langly and Kim to figure out what's happening and how to fix it, before the missing information gets someone killed. Chaz's first hint something is wrong comes when Shadow's treatment fails to match the neurologist's orders.
Reid and Alvez take on a twenty-year-old case in which the killer proudly admits to eleven murders, but has always held that two more were someone else's kills. A twentieth anniversary interview with a victim's sister reveals the last two deaths were a gay couple who didn't live together, and both came from intolerant families. Were one or both of the families involved in their deaths, or are they just as much a distraction as the other killer?
And Reid gets more people knocking on his door in two days than in most of the preceding decade.

Summary
The Masters chose the Sixth City, and against all advice, a deal was made for Washington DC. Reid's team are struggling to adjust to the Neath and its unusual inhabitants, and also to the apparent loss of the rest of the country. On top of this, a killing spree is stretching across the city, with apparently unrelated people slashing complete strangers, with similar techniques but widely varying knives. It's only with the assistance of a Fifth City team of experts in unusual crimes that they can even begin to approach the case from the right angles.
And then the unthinkable happens, and Reid is caught up in a horror of Parabolan origins with a lord from the High Wilderness, the next stage in a drama stretching back before the Fall of London. How will a former Sequencer, a half-breed space bat, and a member of the Calendar Council who subsists almost entirely on ... 'caramels' save them?
