    Bookmarker's Notes

Inalienable Human Rights does a lot of things that few other Mass Effect fanfics even attempt. The main one is its brilliant portrayal of a non-human protagonist, but in its narrative it does an exceptional job at portraying the Alliance as an actual organisation, the wheels of which keep spinning even while the Spectre is off saving the galaxy.

    Summary

The story of an initially-nameless Soldier FA-model Nikke, built to be a footsoldier in an endless war, and her struggle to find a place for herself in a world that has taken everything from her, including her memories.

This is my homage to Nikke, and the incredibly dark, dystopian SF world in which it’s set. It’s not a happy setting, and this will not be a happy story: there will be lots of depression, introspection, misery, trauma, and pain. The main characters are all regular, mass-produced Nikkes, with no plot armour and no superpowers. I’ll try to keep it as lore-accurate as I can, but intersections with the main plot will be minimal (it’s mostly set before the events of chapter 1), and appearances from in-game characters will be few and far between. There will eventually be some F/F romance.

29/4/26 UPDATE: This story is now entering its final arc. It will conclude this summer, with a probable final length of 85-90 chapters.

    Bookmarker's Notes

I've never played the game, in fact I'm barely aware of it, but there's something profoundly compelling about this story taking the world that game presents at face value and just exploring how dystopian it would truly be to live in a setting designed to sell microtransactions to the male gaze. Every influence is in-universe, but the horror comes from taking those out of universe decisions and finding in-universe explanations for them, no matter how uncomfortable those explanations would be. Why are these combat cyborgs so sexualised? What would it be like to share an identical body with eleven percent of your peers? How do you find your own identity and sense of self in a purposefully dehumanising environment?

It's harrowing, but that's why it's so compelling. Too many fanfiction authors will simply wave away the inconvenient parts of a setting, either pretending they don't exist or changing things so that they stop being a problem. Falcon, ascending instead confronts them head on. It presents a world that is both real and horrible in a way that I think only fanfiction can deliver, because I doubt many authors who would invent a setting like this would be able to dissect it quite so thoroughly.

The New Sith Wars have always fascinated me, and this is one of the only works I've encountered that focuses on them. It's a wilder age, where Sith orders rose and fell and the Jedi ruled large swathes of the galaxy as feudal lords.

    Summary

At the height of Dwemer civilization in the closing days of the Merethic Era, a dark priest calling himself Konahrik has delivered a marvel of science to the city of Blackreach--a living dragon.

My take on a question that's bothered me ever since I first played Skyrim: how did Vulthuryol get into Blackreach anyway?

There is an immense weight to this story, stemming from the tragedies it depicts, the tragedies that have already occurred, and the inevitable tragedies that await the Dwemer, the Falmer and the Dovah.

Looking for decent stories in the Batman fandom always feels like looking for the hay in the needlestack, but this story feels like finding out that the hay is made of gold.
