Shane’s stomach dropped, anxiety filling back in him as he shook his head. “What is it Hayden?” He asked, his eyes narrowing and dropping to JJ’s phone, the glint of a news site cast across it upside down from where he stood. He moved quickly, a hand reaching up to grab JJ’s phone as he took in the headline.

His heart dropped into his stomach as he reread the words over and over, wishing for them to change. He hoped that maybe, maybe, if he reread the words enough, some great power in the universe would will them to change. He wasn’t a religious man, but God, would he pray for this. His hand, which still held the phone in a white-knuckle grip, was now slightly trembling, a visible testament to the pent up agonizing worry ruminating within him.

Summary
Luca Haas is at 22 the right winger on the Ottawa Centaurs hockey team. Often called the baby of the team, he’s a shy guy who likes to draw in off time. When he was younger he looked up to Ilya Rozanov, who is now his teammate and the captain of the Centaurs. Getting over the little celebrity crush on Ilya wasn’t that easy but by the time 2022 rolls around, he has gotten used to having the Russian and his husband -Shane Hollander- on the team. That’s when he sees someone showing up at the rink during their practices. Not part of the team or the staff, everyone wonders who the young fellow sitting on the bench is. Luca is no different.
Ashton Wiebe, a figure skater who retired way before it was his time to and who happens to be the coach’s -Brandon Wiebe- nephew has been coaching little kids in figure skating. Looking younger than he actually is, he often gets mistaken for a teen. Ashton has no interest in the Centaurs practice runs or that’s what it looks like to anyone on the ice. In truth he’s sketching them on his notepad. When Luca shows interest in his 'performances', Ashton lets him watch which is not a privilege he gives to everyone.

Shane heard a strangled shout tear free from his mouth, and then his body was moving without his brain’s input. He flew across the ice, ripping his gloves off and reaching for Ilya’s throat. He wrapped his fingers around the warm skin, feeling the flow of blood pulse harder with each beat of Ilya’s heart. His eyes raced across Ilya’s face, desperately looking for a sign that his boyfriend was still with him. Ilya’s eyes were wide and glazed, staring past Shane instead of at him. His face was losing color rapidly, turning a sickly shade of white that mirrored the ice beneath him. His mouth was open, loose and slack, mouthguard still jammed into his upper jaw. Shane watched in terror as Ilya grew limper in his arms.
