Badeline is all of Madeline's repressed feelings. All the desires and thoughts and emotions that she's ruthlessly shoved down in her quest to be unfailingly and completely normal. On the surface, it's all the self doubt and loathing, all the parts of her that whisper how she just can't do it.
What she doesn't say is Badeline is all of the evil in her. The part of her that wants to grab Theo's wrists and *snap* when he reaches out, the part of her that hears Granny laugh at her plight and just wants to make the sounds stop. The part of her that constantly craves violence and death.
She's sure that the Mountain is personifying those things so she can conquer them, leave them behind forever. Be normal and good, for once in her life. She just has to be strong.
