My favorite thing about this besides the open and raw tenderness is how they exist in a world where they make room for one another. In canon and most other fics their jobs impose and homophobia is a shadow that follows them at all times. Here? None of that. Somehow it’s still them even though Shane is less anxious and more forward. Ilya is still him even though he is softer more sure. My heart feels tender after reading this. Just beautiful.
My other favorite thing about this are the metaphors. *chef’s kiss* pun intended. I’ll be soaking in this like the cake in Ilya’s fridge until you give us another piece of this universe (no pressure, only appreciation). 🫶

Ilya brings their joined hands up to his face and presses a small, tired smile to the back of Shane’s hand. “You and me.”

“How much longer?”
“I don’t know, probably like fifteen minutes?” he can hear Shane shrug through the phone.
“Hmm. . .” Ilya looks at Shane’s location where he’s watching him inch closer to their house on the map. “Phone says thirteen.”
“Are you watching my location?” Shane laughs from where he’s talking to Ilya through the screen in his car.
“Mmm, yes. I’ve been so miserable without my husband. I want you home.” he groans. “Now, preferably.” he adds and Shane huffs a laugh.
(ie. shane is on the way home from a work trip and talks to ilya the whole way home until they're finally reunited (plus a little glimpse into the future))
