Ilya is not going to steal Shane Hollander's dog. That would be illegal. And wrong. And someone would probably find out and make Ilya give him back.
So. Not stealing.
But there is nothing wrong with giving Chernysh all the pats and treats that he deserves, is there?
Nothing wrong with encouraging Chernysh to spend more and more time at Ilya's house until he doesn't even remember who Hollander is.
Because Hollander is stupid and boring and does not deserve a dog as good as Chernysh. No, he doesn't, does he? Because Chernysh is the best boy in the whole world, yes he is.

“Okay,” Hollander says, voice cracking.
He doesn’t say anything else. The air’s so heavy around them that it feels like being in the middle of a scrum, the weight and heat of all those bodies pressing down on you. Danger always feels like hockey; it’s the most dangerous thing Ilya knows, except for this. Everything dangerous in his life involves men’s bodies and just how close he can get to them. Closer than he probably should.
A year after mysteriously dropping out of the 2009 draft, Shane Hollander is signed by the Boston Raiders, right behind Ilya Rozanov. Having the two biggest stars in the league on the same line is great for Boston — but playing alongside their worst rival was never exactly in Shane or Ilya's plans. Especially not when staying away from each other starts to feel just as impossible as getting along.

200k words of plot and character driven narrative perfection. Absolutely addictive and such sympathetic characterisations.
Shane moves to Boston and lives in apartment above Ilya so they see each other heaps and know each other better. Get busted kissing in an alley by Hayden and Shane’s anxiety wins. They have a huge fight and Ilya’s father dies the same day Shane works himself out at a gay bar. Fortunately.

“Why did you have to go and get traded?! You realise we’re going to have to see each other every day from now on, and play together, and-”
“Yes,” Ilya interrupted. He didn’t want to know how long Hollander’s list was. “I know.”
Hollander took a deep breath. “Okay, listen,” he said. “Just so we’re clear - we don’t know each other outside of playing against each other, right?”
“Right.”
“And we can’t- can’t hook up anymore.”

OR: Ilya gets traded to Montreal in October 2014. He's lonely, and angry, and he misses Boston. He doesn't know if it helps that Hollander is there or not.

Two lost boys finding their ways to each other. Redemption arcs for everyone including the Voyageurs (kinda). Ilya and Shane are their canon selves although Ilya’s obsession with Shane makes him forgive some pretty terrible behaviour. I loved it being in Ilyas POV because I’ve never felt so frustrated with Shane before even though I know comphet is the problem not him.
