Summary
Eddie knew that there was something up with Buck, he could always tell when something was wrong with his best friend, because even after only a year Eddie was certain he knew Buck better than he knew himself. And there was definitely something off about the other man.
He tried to keep a close eye on him, always glancing over at him when he wasn’t stuck to his hip, wanting to make sure he was okay. After everything he’d been through, Buck had to be okay.
At some point Buck had begun coughing, little closed mouthed coughs, like he was trying to hide them, but of course Eddie noticed, so he upped his surveillance.
And then the cough got worse, and worse, and worse, until Buck was staggering back and then collapsed to the floor.

After passing his recertification test Buck suffers from a pulmonary embolism, and it only gets worse from there.

Summary
Buck holds up his hands, spreading them almost apologetically, and it still takes Eddie a second too long to realize what he's showing him. He's too busy scanning for fresh scars, or burns, or infected tattoos, to realize for a second -- Buck's left index finger is half gone. It ends just below his second knuckle, the stump already smoothly healed over. Eddie reaches out, the medic in him taking over, and Buck lets him, standing there obediently while Eddie cradles his hand, turns it over between his own.
"It's healed," Eddie says dumbly. "Is there any pain?"
"None," Buck promises.
"But -- when?" Eddie asks.
Buck grimaces. "Six weeks ago," he admits. "Please don't be mad."
