Spock quit holding onto his sehlat and instead grasped the front of Sarek’s shirt with his small fingers, starting to feel a little more protected than before.
“You are safe here,” his father continued, so low it almost seemed to be meant for his own ears than for Spock’s. “I will not allow you to come to harm.”

“Spock, I…” McCoy stopped again and swallowed, still not meeting Spock’s gaze. His voice came out almost strangled. “Well, I… I feel like I need to admit some things to you. I dunno if we’re gettin’ out of here and I just need you to know how I really feel. How I’ve always felt.”
He hung his head, then, as if he were doing and saying shameful things, as if he deserved to feel ashamed at all. Spock leaned forward, wishing he had the courage to close the gap between them and take McCoy into his arms.
“Yes, Doctor?” He prompted gently, expecting the sentiments of friendship, the admittance of the fact that they’d never really been enemies with one another, that McCoy’s playful antagonism had never been meant as true hostility.
McCoy drew in a deep breath, and then—
“I’m in love with you.”

There were obvious reasons he felt drawn to him.
Pike held a natural air of authority, a gravity that compelled everyone to look when he walked in the room, to obey as he directed them.
The way he carried himself, the way he spoke and acted, everything about him just made it painfully obvious he’d been born to lead. No one could envision him as anything but the man in charge.
It wasn’t as though McCoy hadn’t noticed any of that.
Or: McCoy is in love with Captain Christopher Pike and has been for a while. Pike finally notices him.
