And ‘waiting’ feels too close to ‘pretending’, too much like doing nothing, and Tess always said doing nothing was a choice and not an excuse and—well, she said a lot of things. But either way, it feels like giving himself an out, so Cliff takes a deep breath and makes himself use the only play he thinks he has left:

A generational talent according to the media, never mind that there was a different kid from Canada they’d describe as such every year. They said he was different, of course. Or going to be, anyway. Maybe he was, maybe he wasn’t, Ilya had thought, it didn't matter. He would never play in the show.

    Scent patches were mandatory for anyone participating in World Junior's, but a lot of the Russian guys Shane saw in the hotel or around the rink had them loosely attached to their necks or not quite centered over their scent gland. Shane had been on his way to his parents' car when the wind shifted, and he smelled that Rozanov, leaning against the wall and not-at-all-surreptitiously fishing a carton of cigarettes out of his pocket, must have been one of them.

Crowell must have asked for a favor and who knows what he’s promised them in return. Who better to distract from a scandal than Canada’s favorite son?”

    The realization hits Ilya like a punch to the solar plexus.

    “They’re trading Shane fucking Hollander?” Reilly questions with utter disbelief. It takes a half second more before he follows the question with another. “We’re signing him?”

    News that Dallas Kent, up and coming star center for the Toronto Guardians, is wanted for murder breaks during the Sochi Olympics.

    Neither Shane nor Ilya have any idea that it will change their lives.
