He had known, deep down, that it had been a bad idea to ask Ilya to come with him this summer. Perhaps if he hadn’t been injured, lying in that hospital bed high off his face on pain medication, he wouldn’t have found the courage in the first place. But when Ilya walked in looking like he was one word from falling apart, Shane had relented and let himself hope, desperately, pathetically, that Ilya felt a fraction of what Shane did as Ilya stroked his face with the back of his knuckles, how he felt when Ilya had confessed that Shane’s injury had scared him. And perhaps if Rose hadn’t filled his head with stupid, romantic fantasies, he wouldn’t be standing in the summer breeze at his parents cottage, feeling the same way he had after leaving the Vegas penthouse all those years ago.

Shane starts to get anxious about the radio silence from Ilya following his invitation to the cottage. After a conversation with Rose, he finally reaches out to cauterise the wound and get an answer to the question he wished he hadn't asked.
