    All of SHIELD has heard Director Fury talking about "the missus" and assumes he has a wife. By the time he realizes the mistake, it's too late to explain that he actually meant his alien cat, Goose. So when pressed about the nonexistent wife, Fury lies and says no one's ever met his wife because she's Captain Marvel.
    It works. He's got the only pager to Carol, and no one's allowed to use it but him. So it doesn't matter.
    Until Carol comes back to Earth.
