Wanted it with a kind of sharp, aching intensity that sat behind his ribs like something alive, a counterpart and contradiction to the claim that was already branded there. A promise would have been simple. Clean. Something he could place between them like a shield.

Dain has always been drawn to their simplicity, just because life is so chaotic. Breaking life down into rigid rules was a survival mechanism that served him well. Up to a point. But while he’s let go of that way to live now, knows it destroyed most of his friendships and relationships, it lives on in certain parts of his life. As wingleader, he’s known to be hardass, a stickler for rules – but rules are there to keep cadets alive, so he won’t apologize for that.
