Summary
It's not even like Will is some godlike specimen. His skin is olivey and a bit summer-tan, and he has floppy, honey-brown hair and a few moles smattered adorably across his face and arms, but he is very much just a boy. Average height, average build, symmetrical face. He's wearing jeans and a Zelda T-shirt and plain white Vans. But he gives Mike an awkward half-smile and a wave as he introduces himself at the box office, and Mike can actually feel himself get stupider.
Will and Mike meet working at their local movie theater, and Mike is so into Will — particularly his hands — that he almost gets fired.

Summary
Will digs his teeth into the side of his cheek, looking at the other boy. He had so many freckles. They even went up past the boy's hairline, and down his shirt collar, and were all over his hands. Maybe they were on the top of his head under his hair and Will just couldn't see. His tail was fluffy, not sleek like other wolves he's seen. Maybe it's because the pup's head hair was so fluffy, slicked down in some places and curled in others. Will wonders if it's purposeful, but he knows better than to ask.
“...Do you have any friends?” Will doesn't respond, and the pup clears his throat, looking uncomfortable. “Uhm- I don't either. Not yet. Not any real friends- Nance says that a real friend is better than fake people trying to be your friend. And she has a best friend, so she has to be right, just this once.”

Summary
Before Mike left for school the next morning, he looked positively giddy in his new outfit and ‘masculine’ cologne. Karen almost made him pose for a picture because of how handsome he looked, but she didn’t want to risk losing the mom points she’d worked so hard to earn the night before. Karen was really starting to gain confidence in her assumption about it being for a new girl. She was vaguely aware that Mike had a little girlfriend in the past—some puppy love situation—but obviously, he had his eye on someone new now.
What threw her for a loop, however, was when Mike carefully selected one of his new outfits and spent twenty whole minutes in front of the mirror just to hang out with Will.

"Working at the cafe has its ups and downs. For example, free smoothies, good. Annoying customers, bad. Will Byers, good. Will Byers, bad. In the few months since getting this job, Mike has maybe, just slightly, developed a huge crush on his coworker. In his defense, Will just makes it so easy. Shiny brown hair, shinier eyes, and the shiniest smile. Mike is so down bad that he can’t even think of another adjective. Will turns his head, and his silver hoop earring glints in the sun. Shiny. Mike thinks about quitting on the spot. He’d throw his apron on the ground and everything, really make a show of it. Maybe that’ll get Will’s attention. God, he’s a loser."
