Summary
Northern Italy, 1982.
Viktor returns to his hometown for summer break from university. The year of distance has done little to dull what he feels for his best friend, and being back at his side will put Viktor’s unruly heart up to the challenge once again.
Meanwhile, Jayce has spent that same year learning just how quiet life can be without Viktor in it. But why does he think about the other boy so often? No. There is nothing weird about missing his friend. He is not weird.

In the Talis house, as loving as it is God-fearing, Viktor found comfort in sharing a bedroom with the closest person he still had. Jayce did not fully understand it then, but he would in the future. Especially when he caught his face in a looking glass. In the years to come, he would grow into a fine man, a future king and son of kings stretching back in an unbroken line for well over a century. He’d have the sort of golden face that could have belonged to a kind man, a good one, if only his world were kinder.
(But it wasn’t. Because Jayce's father cannot live forever, and one day he will be King, and a King will have need of the wife kept safe in a tower for him.)

Summary
Jayce has heard of the rumors. Derogatory words whispered Viktor's way in the hallways of the academy, for taking up space next to Jayce, like he's disposable, a mere accessory to Jayce's name. People approached him thinking he'd agree, laugh it off, somehow everybody underestimating Viktor's importance in Jayce's life and reaping the consequences when they'd suddenly lose their careers.
Sometimes Jayce wishes he could lock Viktor up so he could protect him from the scrutiny.
After Viktor is attacked, Jayce and him have to recon with their feelings during Viktor's surprise heat.
