As Colin looked at the pair from across the ballroom, the jealousy bloomed grotesquely in his chest, like a large carnivorous plant that threatened to swallow him whole. When Penelope took Lumley by the elbow, Colin felt a phantom weight at his own side, taking his arm. In that moment, he could not help the image that flashed into his mind— Penelope on his arm, beaming up at him. Her eyes were shining as they usually did in those small moments between just the two of them. The jealousy was overtaken by something else, a kind of…yearning. To have Penelope at his side, to have her look at him like that again.
It was at exactly that moment that Penelope turned to scan the ballroom, and her gaze caught his.

And that is why, a year later as she stands by the hedge of the gardens, quiet as she always is, the laugh that Penelope hears tumble from her loves’ lips seems far too cruel to even be real.

“What about the mirror?” Penelope asked as she turned to look at their reflection in the mirror which was situated in the darkest corner of the room. Although the corner itself was dark, the picture in the mirror was clear as ever; the lit candles throughout the room provided warm light which illuminated the space – as well as gave it an intimate atmosphere.
“I want you to look at yourself in the mirror, and see what the rest of us are seeing,” Colin said behind her. '

Colin comes bursting into Penelope's room late at night angry about the things she'd written about herself. He tries to help her gain self-confidence but instead reveals some new information about himself.
